Just like last year, Apple made two versions of its iPhone. In last year’s 6s, Apple chose to utilize two separate processors — one marginally better than the other. In this year’s iPhone 7, Apple again chose different components, this time for the modem.
One iPhone has a Qualcomm modem, while the other uses hardware from Intel. Unlike last year, the improvement for the better of the two wasn’t exactly marginal. According to a report from Cellular Insights, the Qualcomm modem outperformed Intel by 30 percent. The different modems are available in both the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus — meaning, four unique phones, essentially.
